Affirming Since 2019

Being Affirming (specifically within the United Church of Canada context) means that a congregation has gone through an intentional, public process to become officially designated as an "Affirming Ministry" through Affirm United. This designation represents more than just being generally welcoming - it indicates a specific commitment to inclusion and justice for people of all sexual orientations and gender identities.

Being Affirming means:

Explicit Welcome: The congregation has made a clear, public statement specifically welcoming LGBTQ2SIA+ individuals and families.

Formal Process: The church has completed a structured educational journey, typically including congregational learning, discussions, and a formal vote to become Affirming.

Ongoing Commitment: The congregation has developed and implements an Action Plan (like the one you shared) that outlines concrete steps for education, support, and advocacy.

Public Declaration: The church publicly celebrates and communicates its Affirming status through symbols (like your Rainbow Waterfall), statements, and participation in events like Pride parades.

Theological Understanding: The congregation has engaged with scripture and theology in ways that affirm the full dignity, worth, and inclusion of LGBTQ2SIA+ people in all aspects of church life and leadership.

Intersectional Justice: While focused on LGBTQ2SIA+ inclusion, Affirming ministries recognize how different forms of marginalization intersect, often extending their commitment to other justice issues.

In practical terms, being Affirming means LGBTQ2SIA+ individuals can fully participate in all aspects of church life, including leadership, marriage, and ordination, and can trust that the congregation has intentionally committed to being a safe and celebratory space.
